This is a carved wooden map of Amblecote High Street as it stood in 1892, drawn from historical Ordnance Survey records of the town, edited for clarity and balance before carving. It is an original carved artwork informed by the old maps, not a printed reproduction.
In 1892 Amblecote sat at the heart of the Stourbridge glass district, and some of the finest glass in the world was made within sight of its High Street. This map records those streets as they were.
The map is precision-carved on a CNC machine into high quality beech plywood, chosen for its stability and clean cutting. The carved surface is sealed and varnished to bring up the contrast, then mounted in a solid wooden frame, ready to hang. A2 size, 420 by 594 mm.
Each map is made in my workshop in Brierley Hill, in the same Black Country as the streets it records, and normally dispatched within 1 week. Delivery across the UK and Ireland.
Most of these maps are bought as gifts for a parent or grandparent who grew up, worked or shopped on these streets, often someone who already has everything they need. A familiar street from years past can be a gentle starting point for stories and conversation, including for families living with dementia. That is not a promise, only that the places people know well tend to hold their memories.
